Wawrzek, a boy from Poręba village happens to be a talented artist. He dreams about becoming a student of Wit Stwosz himself and carve like his master figures on wood. After long journey Wawrzek reaches Kraków, where at first he has to face a villain named Czarny Rafał. Soon the boy gets to the master’s workshop. Thanks to his talent and persistent work he is allowed to help in the altar’s construction. One day a king and his court comes to the workshop and gives Wawrzek a pair of nice, yellow poulaines. The boy is excited and moved. Long-lasting work on the alter is coming to an end, but on the exhibition day it turns out that one of the Apostles has no crosier. POŻEGNANIA
POŻEGNANIA
dir. Wojciech Jerzy Has
Poland, 1957, 97min

„Farewells” by Jerzy Has in a remarkable way do justice to Dygatowski’s original story. The dir. succeeded to find visual equivalents of lyrical and reflexive prose of the author of “Disneyland”. Not only did he show, in a believable manner, psychological background of the main characters’ behaviour, full of nuances and understatements, but he also maintained ironic and grotesque atmosphere of their doings.
